The Caravel Platform


Caravel Bio is building the first limitless protein evolution platform. Today, the bounds of protein engineering are defined by the organisms and genomes from which proteins are expressed. Caravel surpasses this limitation by enabling high-throughput evolution of cell-free, in vitro, systems. This new capability is enabled by innovations in microfluidics, cell-free protein synthesis, and bacterial spore-display. With our proprietary process, we explore and engineer biomolecules and molecular systems that are inaccessible to cellular technologies.

What does this all mean?

Our name, Caravel, comes from the 13th-century ship that first enabled Iberian fishers to access deeper waters and later enabled global circumnavigation. Similarly, our technology enables broad exploration of protein sequence space, creating proteins that exceed nature’s bounds to make powerful catalysts and therapeutics. The new-to-nature tools we are building, and the data we are collecting, expand the use case of biotechnology, creating enormous societal value.

What are we building today?

Today, we’re using our platform to create long-lasting enzymes for carbon capture and enabling precision manufacturing of proteins with new chemistries through genetic code expansion.
